In autumn 2006 a foster carer came to the Centre Project with a 14 year old unaccompanied asylum seeker. The carer was frustrated by the lack of appropriate provision for the young person who was very isolated and because he was not yet in education, stayed in bed watching TV all day long. The Centre provided an opportunity for the young person to meet other people and be part of the community. The numbers of young people attending the regular drop-in sessions grew and a separate youth provision was created at The Centre, which the young people named Freedom Club to reflect the freedom to make choices.

Most unaccompanied young people arrive in their mid-teen years and are separated from parents, customary care givers, many young people were socially isolated. There are no groups that provide a specialist service that meet the non-statutory needs of unaccompanied asylum-seeking young people or new arrivals in Leicester. They have little stability in their lives.
